Dom Metz is a professional drummer and bandleader based in London, UK, known for his versatile work across jazz, big band, pop, and blues. Originally from France, he combines European musical sensitivity with an American big band education to create a distinctive style on stage and in the studio.
Training and early career
Dom studied drums and big band drumming at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles under renowned educator Steve Houghton, immersing himself in ensemble playing, reading, and studio techniques. This grounding in American big band tradition continues to inform his approach to time, sound, and section support.
After returning to Europe, Dom settled in London, quickly becoming an in-demand player on stages throughout the UK and internationally. His live work has taken him across a wide range of venues and festivals, building a reputation for reliability, musicality, and stylistic flexibility.
Artists and performances
Dom has performed with legendary French singer and songwriter Charles Aznavour, widely regarded as one of the great songwriters of the 20th century and an icon of popular culture. These engagements helped cement his profile as a sensitive, song-focused drummer comfortable in high-profile settings.
He has also appeared with artists including Alfie Boe, Rick Wakeman, and Sir Paul McCartney, demonstrating his ability to move seamlessly between orchestral pop, rock, and mainstream entertainment contexts. This breadth of experience makes him equally at home in theatres, clubs, studios, and large-scale concert halls.
Current projects
Dom currently leads the Glenn Miller Memorial Orchestra, an 18-piece big band touring throughout Europe, where he combines his roles as drummer, musical leader, and curator of the classic swing repertoire. Under his direction, the band keeps the legacy of Glenn Miller’s music alive while engaging contemporary audiences.
Alongside his big band work, he can regularly be seen with American blues artist Marcus Malone and London-based group Jazz Dynamos featuring vocalist Lucy Randell, showcasing his ability to shift from driving blues grooves to sophisticated jazz and lounge-influenced arrangements.
Studio and production work
In recent years, Dom has expanded his activity into management, recording, and production for singer-songwriters. He has worked closely with several artists, including British songwriter Robert Brown, contributing not only drums but also arrangement ideas and production input. This side of his career reflects a broader musicianship that goes beyond the drum chair.
Endorsements
